No matter how you dice it, fruit cocktail is forever linked with San Jose. While there are competing claims, Hebert Gray of San Jose’s Barron-Gray Packing Company took credit for inventing the mix of pears, peaches, grapes, pineapple and cherries in 1930. The most famous variety was produced by Del Monte starting in 1938, and it was produced at its No. 3 plant on Auzerais Avenue from 1941 until 1999.
